Length 27" "Our largest owl. Heavily ringed facial disks make the yellow eyes look small. Lacks ear tufts. Inhabits boreal forests and wooded bogs in the far north, dense coniferous forests with meadows in the mountains farther south. Hunts over forest clearings and nearby open country, chiefly by night but also at dawn and dusk; hunts by day during summer in northern part of range. Call is a series of deep, resonant whoo's. Generally uncommon;
